Babylon '13: Filming Conflict in Ukraine

Hornbake Media Library Room J
Wednesday, October 29, 2014 - 4:00 PM
The Ukrainian film team, Babylon '13, screened and discussed their powerful documentaries about the current conflict in the Ukraine.

The Babylon '13 team is convinced that documentary film making can shape how people understand the world around them. Their project began with the short video, “Prologue,” filmed at Mikhailovs’ka Square, Kyiv on Nov. 30, 2013.  "Prologue," like many of the Babylon ’13 productions, went viral on the internet, generating tens of thousands of views. Among their most famous movies are "The Heavenly Hundred," "Women of War," and "Avengers."

Yurii Gruzinov will present (with Iryna Vushko, assistant professor of history, Hunter College CUNY, as translator) several short films that depict the events in Ukraine between late November 2013 and today: the protest movement in Kyiv, the annexation of Crimea, and the war in Eastern Ukraine.

All of the films are in Ukrainian and/or Russian with English subtitles.  Assistant Professor Sarah Cameron (University of Maryland) will introduce the speakers.  Discussion follows.

Yurii Gruzinov left his native Russia to live in Ukraine as a young adult. A cinematographer by trade, he is a founding member of the Babylon ‘13 group.  On January 22, 2014 Yurii was shot three times while recording the Grushevs'kogo Street clashes. He continues nevertheless. On March 16, 2014, Yurii and his crew were captured while filming a documentary about the Crimean ‘referendum’ and were held by the separatists in Simferopol, Crimea for seven days. While held captive, they were beaten and tortured for refusing (in truth, simply being unable) to provide details on offices and leaders of the “Right Sector.”
