Professor Slotten shares his most recent work in this Colloquium presentation.

"The International Telecommunications Union, Space Radio Communications, and U.S. Cold War Diplomacy, 1957-1963" by Hugh Slotten. 

Professor Slotten is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Media, Film and Communication at the University of Otago in New Zealand. He has written three very well received books on the history of American science, ranging from the Alexander Dallas Bache's coordination of the U.S. Coast Survey in the 19th century to the 20th century history of radio and television. As the most recent recipient of the Charles Lindberg Chair at the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum, he has spent this last academic year on research leave in D.C. working on his new project--the struggle to establish a single global satellite communications system.

The Colloquium meets the first Thursday of each month, in room 2110 Taliaferro Hall at the University of Maryland, College Park. There is Social “hour” with refreshments, 4:00-4:30 pm; and a presentation and discussion of a pre-circulated paper, 4:30-6:00 pm.
