Gideon Avni Lunch Talk

The Nathan and Jeanette Miller Center for Historical Studies invites you to attend a lunch talk by Dr. Gideon Avni  (Israel Antiquities Authority).  Dr. Avni will present a paper titled "Continuity and Change in the Byzantine-Islamic Transition: a View from the Negev Periphery."  Professor Ken Hollum will introduce Professor Avni.

This event is co-sponsored by UMD's Joseph and Rebecca  Meyerhoff Center for Jewish Studies, the Joseph and Alma Gildenhorn Institute for Israel Studies, the Department of Classics, and the Miller Center. 

Dr. Gideon Avni is Head of the Archaeological Division in the Israel Antiquities Authority and a lecturer at the Institute of Archaeology, in the Hebrew University.  His branch of the Antiquities Authority supervises the work of all the archaeological excavations in Israel. 

There are two items which will be distributed via e-mail before Dr. Avni's visit:  an article from the Journal of Field Archaeology (attached below) and a chapter from his recent book, The Byzantine-Islamic Transition in Palestine:  An Archaelogical Approach (Oxford, 2014).
