Heavy Metal Parking Lot: A Screening and Discussion with Director Jeff Krulik

Heavy Metal Parking Lot: A Screening and Discussion with Director Jeff Krulik

College of Arts and Humanities | History Monday, October 17, 2016 3:00 pm Taliaferro Hall, 2118
In 1986, filmmakers Jeff Krulik and John Heyn took camera equipment to the parking lot of the Capital Centre in Landover, Maryland. They came away with four video tapes that would become Heavy Metal Parking Lot, a 17-minute distillation of 1980s suburban heavy metal culture. Like the other films in the Miller Center’s Maryland movie series, HMPL was specific to Maryland’s DC suburbs – the location at the home of the Washington Capitals and Bullets and the Maryland accents are a dead giveaway – but also provided a glimpse into a subculture whose members could be found headbanging throughout the United States and beyond. Krulik, a UMD alumnus, recently donated materials from HMPL and other films to Hornbake Library’s Special Collections. Join us for a screening of Heavy Metal Parking Lot and other documentary shorts at the Miller Center, where Krulik will talk and answer questions about HMPL and other films he has worked on during his career in film and video production. Food and drinks will be served.   Food and drink will be served. In order to help us estimate attendance, RSVP at millercenter@umd.edu or call at 301-405-4299.
