Maryland Film Series presents:
"Hairspray," Dir. John Waters3pm-5pm
Taliaferro Hall Room 2118
Perhaps only John Waters could skewer the 1950s-1960s nostalgia film by deploying camp with the expertise as he did with Hairspray (1988). The legendary filmmaker and Lutherville, Maryland native challenged audiences familiar with film presentations of an “innocent” past by exposing them as ridiculous. Presenting the story of an outcast teenager using a dance contest to desegregate local television, Waters “shocked” audiences in another way: Hairspray was a PG-rated movie designed for a mass audience (though Waters insisted he always intended to “sell out” as soon as he could!). Join us for the last screening in the Miller Center’s fall 2016 Maryland film series.
Pizza and soda will be served. In order to help us estimate attendance, RSVP at millercenter@umd.edu or call at 301-405-4299
