For a long time, the History Department had an excellent graduate program in East Asian history which focused on the political, social, and cultural history of pre-modern and modern China as well as Japan.  Recent retirements have made the program smaller, but the Department is currently re-building this field and hopes to have a program in place again in the near future.

Currently the Department can admit students for the M.A. and Ph.D. in Chinese history.  In addition, students may combine a focus on China with our program in Global Interaction and Exchange, using China as one of their fields in that innovative new Ph.D. program.
