History Ph.D. wins UMD Graduate School Distinguished Dissertation Award.
Congratulations to Mirna Zakic who was awarded a Distinguished Dissertation Award in the category of Humanities and Fine Arts for her doctoral thesis, “The Furthest Watch of the Reich: National Socialism, Ethnic Germans and the Occupation of the Serbian Banat, 1941 – 1944.”
 Zakic was advised by Jeffrey Herf, a Department of History professor.
 Zakic is preparing a future project on the creation of the West German state through an examination of postwar memory, politics and reconstruction in the French Zone of Occupation in southwestern and western Germany in the late 1940s and early 1950s and her research interests include the relationship between ideology, war and society, issues of occupation and collaboration, Volksdeutsche (ethnic Germans) and other ethnic minorities in the twentieth century.

Zakic was one of four students honored at the annual Graduate School Fellowship and Award Celebration, May 1, 2012 at the David C. Driskell Center.
