Kidnappers of Color Versus the Cause of Anti-Slavery

Rick Bell's article" Counterfeit Kin: Kidnappers of Color, the Reverse Underground Railroad, and the Origins of Practical Abolition" published in the Journal of the Early Republic 38.2 (2018): 199- 230 is featured in JSTOR Daily for December 8, 2022. Matthew Wills writes about Rick's account of the thousands of free-born Black people living in the Northern United States who were kidnapped back into slavery. Rick's article concentrates on the period between the banning of slave importation in 1808 and the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850.
