Chiles presents at Queen Anne’s County Historical Society

Dr. Robert Chiles presented the keynote address at the Queen Anne’s County Historical Society’s Independence Day Ceremony on July 4, 2017.  The event, which was attended by a large and enthusiastic audience, was co-sponsored by the Aspen Institute and held at the William Paca Memorial Site on the institute’s Wye River campus in Queenstown, Maryland.  In his speech, Chiles described the ideological underpinnings and historical context of the Declaration of Independence, and then explored how subsequent generations of Americans have drawn on and adapted the words of the founders in pursuit of greater equality, highlighting in particular the cases of William Paca, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Frederick Douglass, Abraham Lincoln, Al Smith, and Harold Ickes.

The address earned favorable coverage in the local press, including the Star Democrat.
