Course Requirements

Degree Requirements

Students must fulfill all the requirements for the Masters in History and the Masters of Historic Preservation. 

Requirements for the M.A. in History
In History, students choose an area of concentration and take a certain number of courses--the General Seminar, readings courses, and Research Seminars--in that area of concentration.  HiHP students will do one research seminar and then six credits of M.A. thesis research (HIST 799).  They write a 60-80 page M.A. thesis under the supervision of an advisor. 

All M.A. students in the HiHP program must complete a minimum of 27 credits in History.  The mandatory course requirements are as follows:

HIST 601 – History and Contemporary Theory (3 credits)
HIST 608X – HIST Major Field Seminar (3 credits)
HIST 6XX – HIST General Field Seminar (3 credits)
HIST 6XX – HIST General Field Seminar (3 credits)
HIST 8XX – Research Seminar (3 credits)
HIST XXX – Elective (3 credits)
*HIST XXX – Elective (3 credits)
*HIST 799 – Master’s Thesis (fulfills HISP 710 & 711) (6 credits)                   
Subtotal = 27 credits
 
MHP Requirements
In the MHP program, students must take the core courses required of all MHP students.  All students in the HiHP program must complete a minimum of 30 credits in Historic Preservation.  The mandatory course requirements are as follows:
 
HISP 600 - History, Theory and Practice of Historic Preservation (3 credits)
HISP 611 - Historical Research Methods (3 credits)
HISP 630 - Preservation Planning and Policy (3 credits)
HISP 635 - Social & Ethnic Issues in HP (3 credits)
HISP 640 - Preservation Law (3 credits)
HISP 650 - Preservation Studio (6 credits)
HISP 655 - American Vernacular Architecture (4 credits)
HISP 670 - Conservation of Historic Buildings (3 credits)
HISP 680 - Preservation Economics (3 credits)
HISP 690 - Preservation Management and Practice (2 credits)
Subtotal = 33 credits

NOTES:

*History Reading Seminars may be taken in other majors that pertain to the major Field per Master of Arts in History (MHIST) Degree Requirement.

- One HIST reading seminar elective (3 credits) is fulfilled by HISP courses to keep the number to 60 credits.

-Nine HISP electives (9 credits) are fulfilled by HIST courses to keep the number to 60 credits.

-HISP 710 & 711 (3 credits) are fulfilled through HIST799 (6 credits). HIST799 is the MA Thesis Research Course.

-There is no non-thesis option.
