Sophie Hess is a Ph.D. candidate in American history. She studies cultural and environmental histories of early America, and her work also explores queer methodologies and issues of memory. Her dissertation examines the impacts of industrialization and natural resource extraction on people, animals, and ecosystems in colonial and early national Maryland.
