Miller Center: A Celebration of Alejandro Cañeque's new book "Empire of Martyrs: Faith and Power on the Global Frontiers of the Spanish Monarchy"

History Friday, April 2, 2021 4:00 pm Virtual, via Zoom. Register to attend.

The Miller Center presents a celebration of Alejandro Cañeque's new book, Un imperio de mártires: Religión y poder en las fronteras de la Monarquía Hispánica (Empire of Martyrs: Faith and Power on the Global Frontiers of the Spanish Monarchy). Discussion with Richard Kagan (Johns Hopkins University) and Erin Rowe (Johns Hopkins University).

Un imperio de mártires covers the violent conflict between Protestants and Catholics that dominated Europe from the second half of the 16th century and how they served to reactivate the martyrial ideal on which the Christian religion had been founded.

In the Hispanic Monarchy, this historical fact was combined with the evangelizing ardor that had taken hold of the religious orders since the early 500's. But, as argued in this book, the analysis of the martyrdom phenomenon in Hispanic society must be done from an imperial perspective, since it was on the borders of the empire where this phenomenon acquired its greatest significance. The martyrdom stories and images that circulated through the territories of the Monarchy were powerful instruments that, in the hands of the religious orders, served to fight against Protestantism in Europe and against Islam in the Mediterranean, as well as to highlight the tensions and conflicts that existed between active orders in East Asia. In the second half of the seventeenth century, these stories also played an important role in the expansion of Spanish colonialism in the American continent.

This event will take place virtually, via Zoom. Registration details forthcoming.
