Mar. 3 - Mar. 8, 2026: Climate Anxiety Week

From March 3rd to March 8th, 2026, 17 for Peace and Justice, a sponsor of the CEDAR Gallery, held their very first Climate Anxiety Week! This week was aimed at helping club members and the general student body deal with their climate anxiety. We hosted Ms. Joy Reeves from the Rachel Carson Council (RCC) on March 3rd, who gave a presentation on career tips, climate anxiety remedies, and professional opportunities with the RCC. Next, on March 4th we hosted Dr. Kate Schapira from Brown University, who led 14 students in a climate anxiety workshop which featured meditations, mindful thinking, and group activities. Both speakers have their books featured in the CEDAR Gallery. On March 6th, 17 for Peace and Justice held a social where club members could get to know one another better while enjoying music, crafts, snacks, and relaxing tea! Lastly, 17 for Peace and Justice partnered with UMD’s Sustainable Ocean Alliance to give back to our campus community.

Apr. 30, 2025: Black and Indigenous Ecologies and Futures Panel

The CEDAR Gallery will also host events like this one, which aim to build on the University of Maryland’s commitment to Sustainable Futures and Black and Indigenous-led Environmental Justice and Climate Justice. As our communities here and elsewhere continue to face a barrage of climate and political crises, there is no shortage of time to uplift and discuss the importance and tough questions of Black and Indigenous environmental practices and struggles.

This Black and Indigenous Ecologies and Futures Panel, brought together two geographers of Black ecologies, a lawyer of Black placemaking, and an Indigenous farmer to discuss the past, present, and future of Black and Indigenous environmental relations in the United States and Brazil, with a particular focus on Tappahannock, Virginia, Durham, North Carolina, and Bahia, Brazil. Dr. Nahwilet Meissner and Dr. Porter guided the conversation through themes such as food sovereignty, land reform and access, archival methods and silences, Black and Indigenous ecological thought, and both constraints and possibility in this work and study.
