Wooden Capitalism: The U.S. Economy and Environment in the Nineteenth Century

On September 16 and 17, the Miller Center will host Daniel Immerwahr, the Bergen Evans Professor in the Humanities at Northwestern University and a contributing writer for the New Yorker.  As you may know, Professor Immerwahr's 2019 book, How to Hide an Empire: A History of the Greater United States, is this year's First Year Book at the University of Maryland.
 
On Thursday, September 17, Professor Immerwahr will give a lecture at 4:00 in the Berlin Room (TLF 2110) for the Miller Center, separate from his First Year Book activities: "Wooden Capitalism: The U.S. Economy and Environment in the Nineteenth Century," based on his current book project. 
 
As part of the First Year Book program, there will be two campus-wide events with Professor Immerwahr on Wednesday, September 16: a noon lecture, "America 250: A History of the Greater United States," in the Stamp Student Union's Prince George's Room; and a 5:00 public discussion, "Is America an Empire? Does It Matter?" in 3301 Thurgood Marshall Hall. These are geared to undergraduate students and the campus community at large. Students can obtain a free copy of How to Hide an Empire at the Stamp Student Union's Information Desk. Faculty and staff can get a copy at the Office of Undergraduate Studies, 2110 Marie Mount Hall.
