Book Launch | Jews and State Building: Early Modern Italy and Beyond | Bernard Cooperman, Serena di Nepi, Germano Maifreda

History Monday, March 24, 2025 2:00 pm - 3:15 pm Francis Scott Key Hall, 1117 Zoom online

The Department of History, the Meyerhoff Ceenter for Jewish Studies, and the Miller Center for Historical Studies is sponsoring tree talks to mark the occasion of the publication of a new book exploring the history of the Jews in Italy between the early modern period and the emergence of a unified Italian state.

The three editors will speak about their effort to challenge the traditional paradigm that looked at the history of Christian-Jewish interactions only through the prism of anti-Semitism. The book tries to demonstrate strategies of coexistence between different religions and cultures, strategies that helped to shape early modern European political and social history and were instrumental in defining Italian modernity. The book is based on the proceedings of a conference held at University of Maryland in 2019.

In person or online.
