The Miller Center | Finding the Money | Maren Poitras

Miller Center Event, Finding the Money

The Miller Center | Finding the Money | Maren Poitras

History | Nathan and Jeanette Miller Center for Historical Studies Tuesday, April 16, 2024 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm Taliaferro Hall, 2110 (Berlin Room)

Join us for a screening of the 2023 film Finding the Money. The film documents the work of dissenting economists--scholars of Modern Money Theory (MMT)--who are on a mission to educate academics, policy makers, and the general public about the nature of the national debt and of money itself.

Two of the film's storylines will be of particular interest. MMT scholarship upends our familiar understanding of government spending and financial policy in currency-issuing nations such as the United States. And it demonstrates that the conventional story--still taught in economics departments and repeated in most economic histories--cannot be supported by the documentary record. Most discussions about money and debt in the media, in college classrooms, and in political debate are grounded in a history of money that is demonstrably false.

Join us for a post-screening discussion with the film's director, Maren Poitras. Space is limited! RSVP here to secure your seat.
