Miller Center | Women Commemorating WWI | Allison S. Finkelstein

History Thursday, December 9, 2021 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm Online Zoom

Join UMD Department of History Alum Dr. Allison S. Finkelstein as she discusses her new book, Forgotten Veterans, Invisible Memorials: How American Women Commemorated the Great War, 1917-1945(University of Alabama Press, 2021). Finkelstein's book examines the ground-breaking role American women played in commemorating those who served and sacrificed in World War I. In her talk, she will discuss the ways American women pioneered a relatively new form of war commemoration that impacted American practices of remembrance and encouraged Americans to consider different definitions of what constitutes a memorial. In the process, these women shifted the course of American memorialization practices, even though their methods did not achieve the widespread acceptance they had hoped for.
