From the mid-nineteenth century to the close of the twentieth century, China experienced profound transformations in its governance, economy, culture, and daily life. This course delves into the significant historical shifts that China navigated from the late Qing dynasty to the post-Mao era, encouraging a critical examination of historical contingencies, alternative paths, and the intended and unintended consequences of pivotal events. The course combines lectures and discussion sessions to explore the political and societal changes that shaped China as we know it today.
