HIST328Y Cities in Flux: Urban Environmental Histories of Water | McRae

Fields: Global Interaction and Exchange; Science, Technology, Medicine, and the Environment

Every day, massive volumes of water move in and out of the world’s cities. The way water moves in urban spaces, however, is more than a technical question: it is a historical problem that cities have confronted for centuries. In this class, we’ll take a look at how water has shaped cities over time, and how increasing urbanization has shaped humanity’s relationship to water, creating the hybrid “waterscapes” that undergird cities—and occasionally undermine them. If you’ve ever been curious about water, its significance in modern urban life, and its relationship to bigger questions of urban inequality and environmental justice, this is the class for you!
