HIST428B Seven Revolutions in Postwar Africa | Landau

Field: Africa and the African Diaspora; Global Interaction and Exchange; Empires and Colonialism; Cultural and Intellectual History; Economics, Labor and Capitalism; Politics, Law, and Government

Most of Africa achieved political independence peacefully after 1945,but revolutions and warfare roiled African countries nonetheless. Some revolutions were successful, some not so much. One thread throughout: things are not always as they seem.
HIST428B is about the reasons for violence, the effect of violence, and the way in which African people understood and undertook rebellion and transformation at the end of the age of imperialism in Africa. We will look at white supremacy in this framework.
The course treats seven, with common reading, together. You will then write about an eighth revolutionary situation on your own. You will come away with a keen appreciation of modern Africa and the forces still at play in it.
