A student of Ira Berlin's in US History, now an Assistant Professor at the University of West Virginia, Kimberly Welch has just received a large grant from the NSF for her project "Black Litigants in the American South, 1820-1850." In this project, she will create a database of 2000 cases involving both free blacks and slaves involved in legal cases in the antebellum South. According to one of the NSF reviewers, "this database will be of tremendous assistance to scholars examining the use of courts and the role of legal cultures and local regimes in upholding and undermining slavery."
Congratulations to Kim!
