UMD Historians Help Train K-12 Teachers

Teachers never rest and summer is the season for many K-12 educators to engage in professional development. With that in mind, MCHC is proud to announce that we once again helping teachers across our state to do just that. All next week, from Monday to Friday, the Center will be bustling with teachers joining us for our annual Summer Teacher Institute, which we offer in partnership with the Department of History at the University of Maryland. Richard Bell is the faculty director for this week-long program but the real work is done by our brilliant and tireless Education Department team, led by David Armenti.

The theme this year is "Liberty and Justice for All?: Freedom and Citizenship in the New Republic." We designed this focus on the critical decades from 1775 to 1825 to help the 20 teacher participants coming to our campus next week to engage with the questions raised in our wonderful Unfinished Revolution exhibition and with the extraordinary strengths of our library collections.Anyone who finds themselves near France Hall or the Baldwin Library next week should stop in and see what we are up to. We’ll also be making off-site visits to our partners at Fort McHenry and Riversdale House Museum.

Education is the Center’s core mission. We are very pleased to have Katie, David, and the staff delivering this professional development program to our educators and that the lessons they learn at the Center will then inform their classroom teaching this fall and likely for years to come.
