Muncy Interviewed For Podcast Series Titled “Working History”

Professor Robyn Muncy has been interviewed for a podcast series titled “Working History” which is sponsored by the Southern Labor Studies Association. In her episode, “What Does ‘Working Class’ Mean in American Politics,” Muncy discusses her current research on the use of the term “working class” in U.S. political culture since the 1930s. Her research looks at mass-distributed print media to track trends of when the term became popular. In her findings, she has discovered that the use of “working class” exploded in the 1970s, and then a decade later in the 1980s. The goal of Muncy’s work is to explain why the term became such a conventional and widely used feature of U.S. political conversations in the late 20th century. Additionally, she questions why the acceptance of a working class did nothing to advance the living standards of American workers.
