Rick Bell Awarded Kirwin Faculty Research and Scholarship Prize

History Professor awarded 2022 Kirwin Prize

At the UMD Faculty & Staff Convocation held September 14, 2022, Rick Bell received the Kirwan Faculty Research and Scholarship Prize for 2022. The award honors a faculty member for a highly significant work of scholarship completed in the last three years. The award recognized Rick’s recent book, Stolen: Five Free Boys Kidnapped into Slavery and their Astonishing Odyssey Home (paperback Simon & Schuster, 2020) noting the recognition the book has received in national media outlets, including prominent reviews in The Wall Street Journal and on National Public Radio. The book was also a finalist for the 2020 George Washington Prize, which recognizes the year's best works on the nation's founding era (1760-1820).
