Rosemblatt Presents Paper At The University Of London

Professor Rosemblatt has presented her paper, “Mexican Anthropology and Inter-American Knowledge” at the University of London.

Professor Rosemblatt has presented her paper, “Mexican Anthropology and Inter-American Knowledge” at the “Sites of Invention: Latin America and the Global History of Historical and Anthropological Knowledge” at the University of London. The conference took place on June 9, 2016.

Rosemblatt’s paper focused on the contact between Mexican and US anthropologists, 1930-1945. It highlighted two key figures in the inter-American discussions of race and indigeneity. John Collier, the New Deal Commissioner of Indian Affairs (1933-1945), admired Mexican policies toward native peoples and helped create the Inter-American Indigenous Institute. Mexican anthropologist Manuel Gamio, who worked in government agencies devoted to native affairs and headed the Inter-American Indigenous Institute, sought to project Mexico onto a global stage. But his plans were thwarted by the prevailing view that Mexico was backwards and its science derivative.
