Professor Philip Soergel has presented his paper, “The Genesis of Identity Markers in the Post-Reformation Period” at “The Cultural History of the Reformation: Current Research and Future Perspectives” conference at the Herzog August Library in Wolfenbüttel, Germany. The conference took place between June 15-18.
The paper discussed the creation of Lutheran musical tradition over the development of the new church in its first two centuries. Soergel examined the many different types of singing that began in the Lutheran church as well as why the types were important to the reformers at the time. Additionally, he questioned historians and the time it took them to accept the value of the Lutheran tradition’s music.
