Fields: Europe, Britain, and Russia; Cultural and Intellectual; Social Change and Social Movements; Religion and Society; Pre-1750

This course will survey the changes that occurred in religion in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Europe as a result of the Protestant and Catholic reformations. Topics to be covered include there form of marriage, sex, and society; changes in ritual; the Reformation and music; and the role that religious change played in disciplining society and the growth of state power.
